Senyar Championship Kicks off at Katara

The fifth edition of Senyar Championship kicked off today at Katara beach amidst a warm atmosphere infused with heritage during the opening ceremony of this annual championship.

The event will go on until April 9 with the total number of 806 sailors across 67 teams whose dhows sailed to Fisht al Hadid area in Sealine.

Senyar Championship is divided three major categories of -Allafah, fishing and pearl diving.

The competitions of the participating teams will start on Wednesday Alafah which to be held on April 5 and April 9. While the Pearl diving and fishing competitions will take place on Thursday and Friday prior to holding of Senyar closing ceremony of al Qafal on April 9th.

The organizing Committee of Senyar traditional championship has earlier checked all boats to ensure that they have fulfilled all requirements including a license for sailing for more than five days.

In addition, another license from the Ministry of Transport and Communication is also required, besides meeting other logistic and supply requirements.

The committee has formed seven sub committees, each comprising six members and responsible for eleven teams.

In an attempt to make it easier to the committee that comprises 110 members, all the participating teams have been given 7 different colours.

Winners of the first and second positions in pearl diving will have the priority to represent Qatar in pearl diving competitions at the GCC level, as per terms introduced by the committee this year. While the teams that will gain less than% 20 of the required amount will be exempted from competitions.
